Many of the slide shows on my web site are Flash-based. This page contains instructions on running them.
Slide show player controls
The basic slide show controls are shown in the following figure. At the bottom of the main picture are a set of thumbnails. The number of thumbnails depends on whether you're viewing the slide show in the normal mode (shown) or the "full screen" mode. The controls are on the side of the thumbnails. Here's a description of the controls from left to right:
- "Previous set of thumbnails" scrolls the thumbnails to the right to go to a previous set where a set is defined as the number of thumbnails that fits on the screen. If you're at the start of the thumbnails, this control doesn't do anything. Using this control does not change the main photo.
- "Previous picture" goes to the previous thumbnail and changes the displayed photo to match that thumbnail.
- "Next picture" goes to the next thumbnail and changes the displayed photo to match that thumbnail.
- "Next set of thumbnails" scrolls the thumbnails to the left to go to the next set where a set is defined as the number of thumbnails that fits on the screen. If you're at the end of the thumbnails, this control doesn't do anything. Using this control does not change the main photo.
- "Play/Pause". Depressing this control while in the pause mode causes the slide show to play. Depressing it while the slide show is playing causes it to pause.
- "Full screen" causes the photos to occupy most of the area on the screen. If you're viewing in the full screen mode, depressing the control causes the slide show to return to the normal mode. The full screen mode is the best mode for displaying the photos, but takes more bandwidth than the normal mode.

Captions
To display the captions for the photos, place your cursor somewhere within the photo as shown in the following example:

Large Thumbnails
Rolling your cursor over a small thumbnail will display a larger thumbnail as shown in the following example:
Permalinks
A permalink is a method to be able to capture the specific address of a photo in a Flash slide show. This is useful if you wish to start the slide show at a specific photo or to send a friend a specific starting point. Click here to see more explanation of permalinks and how to use them.
