Durango

Our 2005 vacation was to Durango, Colorado.  We spent three days in the area.

The first day was spent on an all-day off-road trip driven by Ron Sweet of Thin Air Mountain Tours.  Sarah and I were the only paying customers, but he brought along his mechanic, Brian, his 12-week old puppy, Otto.  Brian brought his doggie, Pip-Squeak.  We spend about eight hours touring the old mining camps between Silverton and Ouray.

The second day was spent on the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad aboard a gondola car.  I had forgotten how crowded they pack the gondolas (3 people to a 2-seat bench), so next time, we'll probably ride in a regular coach car. I've heard that they now offer a premium gondola where only two people are assigned to a 2-seat bench.

The third day was spent at Andrews Lake, between Durango and Silverton, and Ouray.  While in Ouray, we ate in a "new" underground restaurant and toured Box Canyon.
